Of all the cities in the Philippines, Bislig is the one farthest to the east.
Wikipedia's list of the extreme points of the Philippines names Bislig as the country's easternmost city, alongside Laoag as the northernmost, General Santos as the southernmost and Puerto Princesa as the westernmost. Wikipedia's own article on Bislig puts it more directly: "Bislig is geographically the easternmost city of the Philippines."
Checking the numbers
The claim holds up when you compare coordinates. Using the reference coordinates that Wikipedia lists for each city:
- Bislig: about 126.32° East
- Mati, Davao Oriental: about 126.22° East
- Tandag, Surigao del Sur: about 126.20° East
- Surigao City: about 125.50° East
- Davao City: about 125.61° East
Mati and Tandag, the two nearest rivals and both also on Mindanao's Pacific coast, sit roughly a tenth of a degree west of Bislig. Every city in the Visayas and Luzon is farther west still.
These figures are the standard reference points for each city, not the outer edges of their territory. But the gap is consistent with what any map of eastern Mindanao shows: Bislig's coast bulges out toward the Pacific farther than any other city's.
So is Bislig the easternmost place in the country?
No. That honor goes to Pusan Point in Barangay Santiago, Caraga, Davao Oriental, at about 126.60° East. According to Wikipedia, Pusan Point gained fame during the millennium celebrations as the first land in the Philippines to see the 21st century, and it now has a discovery center and eco-park that opened in 2016.
Caraga, Davao Oriental is a municipality, not a city. So Bislig keeps its title as the easternmost city, while Pusan Point remains the easternmost point.
Why it matters
Being this far east has real effects on daily life in Bislig.
Early sunrise. Places farther east see the sun earlier. Since the whole country runs on a single time zone, sunrise in Bislig comes about 20 minutes earlier on the clock than in Manila, which sits more than five degrees of longitude to the west.
Facing the Pacific. Bislig's coast looks directly out at the Philippine Sea, part of the Pacific Ocean. The deep Philippine Trench runs offshore, which is why Bislig is exposed to undersea earthquakes and, as happened in 2023, tsunami waves.
Rain all year. Bislig has a tropical rainforest climate, with heavy rainfall throughout the year and the heaviest in January, when the northeast monsoon pushes moisture in from the Pacific.
A long way from the capital. By Wikipedia's figures, Bislig is about 208 kilometers northeast of Davao City and 152 kilometers from Tandag, the provincial capital. Manila is far across the country to the northwest.
A fact worth knowing
Bislig already goes by three official nicknames. "Easternmost city in the Philippines" is not one of them, but it is a geographic fact that sets Bislig apart from every other city in the country.
