Barangay Mangagoy is now home to the first Barangay Public Employment Services Office (BPESO) in the entire Caraga region, a small but concrete step toward putting government job services closer to where people actually live.
What opened, and where
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) inaugurated the Mangagoy BPESO on February 9, with Vice Mayor Conrad C. Cejoco, City Assistant Administrator Jerson Coma, and DOLE Caraga Regional Director Jason P. Balais among those present alongside barangay officials. It runs as a frontline extension of both DOLE and the City PESO, meaning a resident of Mangagoy no longer has to travel to the city proper just to ask a basic question about a DOLE program.
What it actually does
The BPESO handles job referral and placement, employment facilitation, labor market information, and career guidance, and it also connects residents to DOLE's broader programs: emergency employment, livelihood assistance, and workforce development initiatives aimed at the barangay level. In practice, that covers everything from a first-time jobseeker asking what documents they need, to someone looking for information on a DOLE livelihood grant they heard about secondhand.
Why a barangay-level office matters
Mangagoy Punong Barangay Aaron Castillo put it plainly at the inauguration: "It is a significant milestone for the constituents of Barangay Mangagoy to have easier access to employment and other programs of DOLE and save the cost of going to the city proper for transacting and inquiring about DOLE programs." For residents without reliable transportation money to spare, that saved trip is not a minor convenience, it can be the difference between following up on a job lead and letting it go.
DOLE Caraga's regional director framed the office in bigger terms too, describing it as a way to help close local job mismatches and improve labor market access as part of a nationwide push to decentralize employment services down to the community level.
